SMART (Streamtube Model for Advective and Reactive Transport) has been developed originally to predict the coupled transport of contaminants and surfactants in porous media. SMART employs process-oriented quantitative descriptions in order to guarantee that only measurable parameters are needed as input.

SMART can be applied to problems at laboratory-scale as well as at field-scale.

The transport model is based on a Lagrangian approach. The method allows for a separate treatment of conservative transport and reactive processes. For the description of conservative transport existing mathematical models may be used. Reactive transport is described by a so-called reaction function which can be determined by simulating one-dimensional advective-reactive transport along single streamtubes.

Further features of SMART are:

  • Kinetic sorption model (intra-particle diffusion)
  • Choice of sorption isotherms for equlibrium part of sorption
  • Lithology and grain size distribution of soil are explicitly considered in terms of a mass fraction matrix
  • Saturated and unsaturated conditions can be considered
  • Post-processing tool to make results data compatible with TecPlot

To date, input of SMART is text based. A GUI version, WinSMART, is currently being developed.
